Ice Pick Scars
These are the deepest types of acne scars that you can have. They are very narrow and deep enough to extend far into the dermis. People who have this type of acne scar appear as if the skin has been stuck with something sharp - which is why are given this name. Though most are narrow they can at times look very open and large.
These types of scars can occur when an infection is caused by a cyst or another blemish has become inflamed and has moved its way to the surface of the skin. The skin tissue has been destroyed.
Boxcar Scars
These types of scars are either oval or round in shape and have vertical, steep sides. They are usually wider than ice pick scars and have a deep look to them. They are caused when inflammation occurs when a breakout of acne has destroyed the collagen and the skin tissue has been lost. The skin that remains does not have any support and it will cause the skin to depress. These can be mild to severe counting on the amount that has been lost.
Rolling Scars
These acne scars look like rolling outlines that appear across the surface of the skin. They appear when the fibrous bands of tissue have developed between the subcutaneous tissue underneath the surface of the skin. The bands will pull back the surface of the skin and bind it to deeper structures of the skin.
Hypertrophic Scars
These acne scars are raised mounds of tissue that will usually become larger than when they first developed. They are caused by acne that is usually found on the torso and mainly in men. These are caused when there is too much collagen being produced.
