Accutane

This is one of the most common medicines that can be prescribed to you by your doctor and is a form of Vitamin A. This particular functions to make the sebaceous glands smaller - which will decrease the amount of oil that they are able to produce and to reduce the amount of skin cells that are shed. It also helps to kill off the bacteria that is able to make these things worse. This is believed by many doctors to be one of the most effective treatments - but is only given when no other treatment is able to help.

This is because there are many side effects that can occur from it. Pregnant women should never use it because it can cause birth defects in unborn children. It also has the ability to cause painful joints and you must have blood work done through the whole process.

Topical Antiobiotics

This is another common acne medicine that helps to care for the more severe forms of acne. It functions to destroy the bacteria that sits on the surface of the skin. Erythromycin and clindamycin are the most common and come in the forms of lotions, gels, creams, and astringents. People with mild acne usually use medicines that contain sysilic acid.

Oral Antiobiotics

These medicines are different from the normal types and function inside of the body instead of on the exterior. Doctors will usually prescribe this for almost three years. These help to kill off bacteria in order to treat acne. This type of acne medicine may take a few months to work before it can help the skin.

Retin-A

This is also a prescribed medicine that comes in the form of gel, lotion, and cream. It works its way beneath the skin to help quicken the shedding of skin cells and to loosen the plugs. Some doctors will also use it to help to fade acne scars.

Birth Control

There are some birth control medicines that women can use to help treat acne. These work to lessen the many effects of the hormone - androgen - and to help reduce the amount of oil that is in the skin. This treatment may be used for three months or a few years.
